The government is considering reducing the term of life imprisonment, Home Affairs Advisor Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd.) said, keeping in mind the release of older prisoners.
The advisor made this statement while briefing reporters after the meeting of the Core Committee on Law and Order at the conference room of the Home Ministry at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Sunday (September 14, 2025) afternoon.

The advisor said that according to the Penal Code of 1860, the term of life imprisonment in Bangladesh is currently 30 years. He said that considering age, the term of life imprisonment for women can be 20 years. However, the term of life imprisonment for men will be a little longer. However, this provision of life imprisonment will depend on the age of the accused at the time of sentencing. However, this provision has not been finalized yet and will have some conditions attached to it.

Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd.) said that the movement of the local people by blocking the national highway over the delimitation of the parliamentary constituencies of two unions of Bhanga upazila of Faridpur district is in no way desirable. The advisor said that it is a matter for the Election Commission. They have taken this decision after listening to everything based on logic and arguments. He said that the complaints of the people of that area can be appealed through the appropriate channel. In no way can people be created suffering by blocking roads. No one has the right to block roads. He also said that the movement by blocking roads will not be tolerated under any circumstances. If they do not lift the blockade by today, the law enforcement forces will be forced to enforce the law.
The meeting discussed police training, law enforcement preparation for the upcoming parliamentary elections, steps to prevent kidnapping, theft and robbery, stopping drug entry through the border, overall preparations for the upcoming Durga Puja, recovery of looted weapons, and Raksu and Chaksu elections.
Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Nasimul Gani, IGP Baharul Alam BPM and others were present at the briefing.
