Opposition leader holds meeting with newspaper editors

Desk Report:

The opposition leader of the National Assembly and the Amir of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Dr. Shafiqur Rahman held a meeting with the editors of national newspapers. The meeting was held at the official residence of the opposition leader at 29 Minto Road in the capital on Monday (August 24, 2026) afternoon.

The meeting discussed the current political situation of the country, the role of the opposition in the National Assembly, the implementation of the referendum held on the basis of the July Charter, public suffering, commodity prices, electricity-oil-gas crisis, and the rights of expatriates, including various national and international issues.

After the meeting, Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General and former MP Mia Golam Parwar briefed the journalists.

He said that the Jamaat-e-Islami Amir highlighted the role that Jamaat-e-Islami and the 11-party alliance are playing in the parliament in the current situation. He also mentioned that Jamaat-e-Islami is playing a constructive role as the main opposition party in and outside the parliament.

Mia Ghulam Parwar said that, breaking away from the negative practices of the traditional and traditional opposition parties in the past, Jamaat has taken a policy decision to cooperate with the government’s good work and prevent injustice and anti-people activities in order to maintain the overall stability of the country. Amir also presented this policy to the editors.

He said that the editors have praised this policy of Jamaat. Jamaat’s opposition will be systematic and constructive. The editors have suggested that the country should not be destabilized even if the opposition party protests on the streets.

Mia Ghulam Parwar also said that this was the first exchange of views between Jamaat-e-Islami and the editors after six months of the government. The geopolitical and international situation was also discussed in the meeting.

He alleged that the current government party is treating opposition MPs discriminatoryly in the National Parliament. Opposition members are also facing discrimination in development work, allocation, opportunity to speak in parliament, lawmaking and receiving various notices.

He said that Jamaat-e-Islami is playing a role in the parliament in addressing the electricity, oil and gas crisis, implementing the referendum, controlling commodity prices and protecting the rights of expatriates. But even then, he alleged that they are not getting fair treatment from the speaker.

The Jamaat Amir has called on the editors to present the truth through their writings. He said that the media must cooperate responsibly in the transition to democracy.

Mia Golam Parwar said that the editors believe that Jamaat-e-Islami is playing an exceptional role compared to the past opposition parties in the parliament. They also opined that the government, along with the opposition, must play a responsible role to keep the parliament constructively effective.
