Bangladesh considering China-Myanmar-Bangladesh corridor proposal: Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman

Diplomatic Desk:

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s recently concluded visit to Malaysia and China has witnessed several important developments in trade, investment, infrastructure and regional cooperation between Bangladesh and the two countries. Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman said that the government is currently considering the issue of China’s proposed Kunming-Myanmar-Bangladesh land corridor.

He made this information at a briefing organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday (June 27, 2026) afternoon on the Prime Minister’s visit to Malaysia and China.

The Foreign Minister said that China has proposed a corridor to establish a direct land connection from Kunming to Bangladesh via Myanmar to reduce transportation costs. However, Bangladesh has not yet taken any decision in this regard and the matter is under consideration.

He said that 8 memorandums of understanding (MoUs) and 3 agreements were signed between the two countries during the Prime Minister’s visit to China. Among these, the agreements on the construction of a Special Economic Zone (EPZ) for China at Mongla Port and Anwara in Chittagong are notable. In addition, the two countries have agreed in principle to conduct a feasibility study with China on the Teesta project.

Dr. Khalilur Rahman said that the video released by the Malaysian government reflects the sincere and close relationship between the Prime Minister and the Malaysian Prime Minister. He said that two notes of verbale were signed during the visit to Malaysia on counter-terrorism and investment cooperation.

In addition, Bangladesh and Malaysia have agreed to work together to complete a free trade agreement (FTA) by 2027, he said.

The Foreign Minister also said that currently about two hundred thousand Rohingya are staying in Malaysia. Bangladesh and Malaysia will also work together on the policy issues of Rohingya repatriation.

In the briefing, the Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Humayun Kabir said that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Communist Party of China and the BNP during the visit to China. At the same time, China’s support for Bangladesh’s membership in BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has also been assured.
