Desk Report:
Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said that the people must be worked with to implement the ideals of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and build the Bangladesh of his dream. It is possible to pay true tribute to Shaheed Zia only by being dedicated to the welfare of the people and sharing their joys and sorrows.
The minister said these things while speaking as the chief guest at a food distribution program among the distressed, helpless and pedestrians on the occasion of the 45th martyrdom anniversary of the great independence proclaimer, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman Bir Uttam, at Kazir Deuri intersection in the city on Saturday (May 30, 2026).
The minister said, “Today we are standing at a place with which the memory of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman is deeply intertwined. He was brutally murdered in this circuit house.” But even after killing him, his ideals and philosophy could not be erased. He established multi-party democracy in Bangladesh instead of one-party rule and started a new chapter in the political history of the country.
The minister further said that to pay tribute to Shaheed Zia, one must embrace his ideals and stand by the people. BNP leaders and activists must remember that the people are the main strength of the party. Their interests, needs and expectations must be given utmost importance.
Addressing the leaders and activists, the minister said that the common people for whom we do politics should never be forgotten. We must embrace their joys and sorrows and work to fulfill the expectations of the people through state initiatives.
In his speech as the president at the event, Chittagong City Corporation Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain said that Shaheed Zia was a man born in a short time. His historic declaration of independence in the great Liberation War of 1971 and his heroic participation in the frontline inspired the nation to achieve independence.
He took charge of the country at a critical time after 1975 when the nation was in a state of confusion. He dreamed of uniting the nation and building a prosperous Bangladesh and worked tirelessly to realize that dream.
The program, conducted by Metropolitan BNP member Md. Kamrul Islam, featured special guests Alhaj Ershad Ullah, convener of Chittagong Metropolitan BNP and National Parliament Member, Alhaj Mohammad Abu Sufian, former convener of South District BNP and National Parliament Member, Abul Hashem Bakkar, former general secretary of Chittagong Metropolitan BNP, and others.
Leaders and activists of BNP and its affiliates, people from different classes and professions of the society, and members of the disadvantaged community were present at the program. Later, the chief guest and president distributed food items among the people present.
