Our job will be to ensure complete freedom of the media: Information and Broadcasting Minister

Desk Report:

Our job will be to ensure complete freedom of the media, said Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan. He said this at a ceremony to distribute financial grants among journalists from seven districts of Rajshahi division and scholarships to meritorious children of journalist families at a local convention center in Bogra on Friday (March 13, 2026).

In his speech, the Information Minister said that the media ensures how much the state will work for the welfare of the people, so freedom of the media is not a matter of mercy but rather it is our responsibility to ensure it. He said that the media is an inevitable part of modern civilization. Civilization cannot be practiced without the media.

The Minister called on the media to come forward to ensure accountability in the state and society. He said that in a society where there is no accountability, degraded, hated and humiliated statesmen like Sheikh Hasina are created. He also said, we want to create a culture of accountability by strengthening the media.

The Information Minister highlighted the various steps taken by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, including the distribution of family cards, allowances for imams and muezzins, and agricultural loan waivers, as part of the implementation of the government’s election promises.

The Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atiqur Rahman Rumon, Managing Director of Journalists’ Welfare Trust Bashir Jamal, President and General Secretary of Bogra Press Club, and representatives of various media outlets were present at the event.
