Nationwide canal excavation program to be inaugurated on March 16

Desk Report:

As per the election manifesto, the current government has undertaken a program to excavate and re-excavate 20,000 kilometers of rivers, canals, and reservoirs nationwide in the next five years. The program will start in 54 districts in the first phase. On March 16, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will inaugurate the ‘Nationwide Rivers, Canals, and Reservoirs Excavation and Re-excavation’ program by excavating a canal in Kaharol Upazila of Dinajpur. Ministers, advisors, Chief Whip of the National Assembly, State Ministers, Whips, and members of parliament will simultaneously inaugurate this program in the relevant districts in 53 more districts.

This program will play a positive role in agriculture and irrigation activities, will help increase agricultural production, and create employment for the rural people. At the same time, the amount of surface water will increase, reducing dependence on groundwater, which will help reduce drought, floods, and waterlogging.

This information was communicated through a letter from the Planning-3 Branch of the Ministry of Water Resources.
