Indian High Commission in Dhaka Hosts ‘Dhora Toru Kabyo’ Celebrating the Bond Between Nature and Culture

Diplomatic Desk:

A special dance-drama titled ‘Dhora Toru Kabyo—Nature’s Tale’ was staged in Dhaka, centering on Rabindranath Tagore’s love for nature and his environmental philosophy. Based on Tagore’s famous poem ‘Brikkho Bondona’ (Ode to Trees), the event was organized on Friday (September 11, 2026) at the capital’s Chhayanaut Auditorium by the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC) of the Indian High Commission in Dhaka.

The primary objective of the event was to highlight the eternal relationship between nature, human life, and the environment through the mediums of dance and drama.

Nitai Roy Chowdhury, the Minister of Cultural Affairs of Bangladesh, attended the event as the chief guest. Highlighting Bangladesh’s rich and multifaceted cultural heritage, he stated that the Government of Bangladesh is working in various ways to advance the country’s cultural activities and traditions.

Dinesh Trivedi, the Indian High Commissioner to Dhaka, spoke about the deep cultural ties between India and Bangladesh. He noted that this cultural bond has been further enriched by the shared heritage, literature, and mutual love for nature found in both countries. He remarked that the performance serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to respect and preserve nature.

The ‘Dhora Toru Kabyo’ performance showcased the diversity of Bengal’s six seasons through dance, music, and dramatic expression. It artistically portrayed the various facets of nature in Bengal—ranging from the floral beauty of spring and the warmth of summer to the rains of the monsoon, the abundance of autumn, and the stillness of winter.

The performance highlighted the beauty, resilience, and eternal vitality of nature, as well as the profound connection between the natural world and human life. It presented—in a fresh format—Tagore’s deep affection for nature and the philosophy of harmony between humanity and the natural world that is reflected in his works.

Artistes from the Turongomi Repertory Dance Theatre participated in the performance. The troupe’s artistic director is Pooja Sengupta. She completed her MS in Physics from the University of Dhaka and her MA in Dance from Rabindra Bharati University in Kolkata. In 2013, she pursued higher studies in dance at Rabindra Bharati University under an ICCR scholarship from the Government of India. Trained in Bharatanatyam, Puja Sengupta is known for her creative and innovative work in dance education and research.

She has presented her dance performances on various significant cultural stages and at festivals, both in Bangladesh and internationally.

Through a creative blend of light, music, dance, and dramatic expression, ‘Dhora Toru Kabya’ presents a unique artistic interpretation of Rabindranath’s philosophy of nature to the audience. At the same time, it showcases the diversity and capability of contemporary dance practice in Bangladesh.

The event was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh, distinguished Rabindra Sangeet artists, renowned dancers, prominent cultural figures, and culture enthusiasts from various walks of life in Dhaka, including students and young professionals.
