Sheikh Rabiul Alam MP, the Honorable Minister in charge of the Ministries of Road Transport and Bridges, Railways, and Shipping, has called upon everyone to come forward in establishing a united and peaceful society, alongside molding the younger generation into disciplined, skilled, and responsible citizens through the practice of sports.
He made this call while speaking as the chief guest at the final match and prize-giving ceremony of a football tournament organized by the ‘Green Road Estate Government Employees’ Social Centre’ at the Green Road Government Staff Quarters in Kalabagan, Dhaka, on Saturday (October 3, 2026).
Roads and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam stated that sports are not merely a source of entertainment; they can also be established as a profession and a means of livelihood. Ensuring financial security for those who represent the country at the national level as skilled athletes and bring honor to the nation is part of the government’s election pledges, and the government is working towards realizing this goal. He further remarked that the greatest beauty of sports lies in enjoying victory and accepting defeat gracefully. This sportsmanship needs to be instilled in other spheres of society and the state as well. Sports can play a vital role in fostering a culture of mutual respect, tolerance, discipline, and accountability.
Commending the organization of the football tournament, the Road Transport Minister noted that the Green Road Staff Quarters has long been involved in various social and recreational activities. Since its establishment in 1958, government officials and employees residing there have actively participated in social welfare and civic activities alongside their professional duties. Events of this nature further enrich that tradition. He mentioned that sixteen teams participated in this year’s football tournament, with four teams advancing to the final stage after competing in multiple matches. The players’ speed, ball control, accurate passing, attacking strategies, and team coordination during the final match were highly commendable. Emphasizing the need to involve the younger generation more actively in sports, the Road and Bridges Minister stated that the more youth engage in sports and training, the more capable and disciplined the future generation will become. Sports foster leadership, team spirit, discipline, and a sense of mutual cooperation among the youth. Events involving players, spectators, media personnel, and government officials further strengthen social harmony and unity.
Describing the event—which saw the participation of residents from the Kalabagan Staff Quarters and the surrounding Kalabagan area (Dhaka-10 constituency)—as a vital medium for social harmony and interaction, he urged everyone to stay involved in sports and contribute to the welfare of society and the nation. Government officials, players, sports organizers, media personnel, and people from various walks of life attended the event. Later, the Minister handed over prizes to the players of the winning and runner-up teams.
