FAO Representative Jiaoqun Shi Hopes to Strengthen Collaboration in Bangladesh’s Agricultural Innovation

Diplomatic Desk:

The Gamma Irradiation Centre of the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) has opened new possibilities for the use of modern technology, food preservation, and the production of safe food within Bangladesh’s agricultural sector. Jiaoqun Shi, Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in Bangladesh, attended the inauguration ceremony of the centre—located in Bhabanipur, Gazipur—as a guest of honour.

Mohammad Aminur Rashid, Minister of Agriculture, was present at the event as the chief guest. Other attendees included relevant officials from the agricultural sector, researchers, and various other distinguished guests.

This new Gamma Irradiation Centre is expected to play a vital role in the effective application of nuclear technology for food preservation, the reduction of post-harvest losses, and the enhancement of food security and quality. Furthermore, it will create new opportunities for scientific research and technological innovation, contributing to more sustainable agricultural production and food management systems.

During the event, FAO Representative Jiaoqun Shi highlighted the importance of applying modern scientific technology to the development of Bangladesh’s agriculture and food systems. The FAO has expressed its keen interest in further strengthening collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and other national partners.

Through this collaboration, the organization aims to translate research-based knowledge and technological innovations into tangible benefits for farmers and contribute to the overall advancement of the nation’s food systems.
