High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi Describes Lalon Shah as a Bridge of Friendship Between India and Bangladesh

Diplomatic Desk:

High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, has described the ‘Baul Samrat’ (Emperor of Bauls) Fakir Lalon Shah as a beacon of humanity and a unique bridge of friendship between Bangladesh and India. His philosophy teaches harmony and inclusivity among people, while advocating for the transcendence of social and religious divisions. Highlighting the eternal relevance of Lalon Shah’s songs and philosophy, the High Commissioner remarked that just as a ship lost at sea relies on a beacon to find its way, Lalon Shah’s philosophy serves as a guiding light for humanity.

On Saturday (October 31, 2026), the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC) of the High Commission of India in Dhaka organized a cultural event titled ‘Lalon Sandhya 2026’ (Lalon Evening 2026) at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium on Abdul Gani Road, Dhaka. The event was held to pay tribute to the life, work, and philosophy of the legendary Baul mystic, philosopher, and lyricist, Fakir Lalon Shah. The auditorium was packed to capacity, with over 700 attendees from diverse backgrounds, including the chief guest and special guests. The event served as a reflection of the shared cultural heritage of Bangladesh and India, as well as the profound love people hold for Lalon’s music.

Speaking at the event, High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi emphasized Fakir Lalon Shah’s humanist philosophy, his secular spirit, and his significant contributions to the cultural and spiritual heritage of Bengal. He noted that Lalon’s songs embody universal human values and encourage people to unite, transcending social and religious barriers. Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of the Baul tradition in preserving the shared cultural heritage of Bengal and underscored the role of cultural exchange in further strengthening the bonds between the people of Bangladesh and India.

The event commenced with a performance of traditional Baul music by a troupe led by the renowned Bangladeshi Baul and folk singer, Shafi Mondal. Their performance brought to life the spirituality and mystical philosophy inherent in the Baul tradition of rural Bengal. This was followed by a captivating musical presentation by flautist Gazi Abdul Hakim—husband of the late legendary folk singer Farida Parveen, who was known as the ‘Empress of Lalon Sangeet’—and the renowned folk singer Nasrin Akter Beauty. Their performance showcased a masterful fusion of classical Raga music and Bengali folk traditions.

Subsequently, students from the ‘Achin Pakhi Cultural Academy’ performed a selection of Lalon’s songs in a collective vocal rendition. This ensemble performance of Lalon Shah’s timeless compositions deeply impressed the audience. The final segment of the event featured the internationally acclaimed musical group, ‘Band Lalon.’ Led by Nigar Sultana Sumi, the group delivered a vibrant performance that blended traditional Lalon songs with modern musical arrangements, illustrating how Lalon’s philosophy and music continue to inspire the younger generation.

The event was attended by a host of distinguished guests, including Ahmad Sohel Manjur, MP, State Minister for Housing and Public Works of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh; other Members of Parliament; senior government officials; prominent artists from various musical genres; former ambassadors and diplomats; business representatives; students; educators; young cultural activists; academics; researchers; representatives from think tanks; as well as editors and media professionals. The enthusiastic participation of a large number of young people—including former ICCR (Indian Council for Cultural Relations) scholarship recipients—further enlivened the proceedings.

Centered on the music and humanist philosophy of Lalon Shah, as well as the shared cultural heritage of Bengal, ‘Lalon Sandhya 2026’ (Lalon Evening 2026) served as a significant initiative in strengthening cultural ties, fostering mutual interaction, and deepening friendship between the peoples of Bangladesh and India.
