‘Government is prioritizing sustainable and green tourism’ – Industry Advisor Adilur Rahman Khan

Industry Advisor Adilur Rahman Khan said, we have the world’s largest mangrove forest Sundarbans and the longest sea beach Cox’s Bazar, historical Mahasthangarh, Paharpur, Sonargaon, Rampal, Vajrayogini and the Chittagong Hill Tracts full of natural beauty. Which attract domestic and foreign tourists.

He said, despite its huge potential, the contribution of the tourism sector to the national economy of Bangladesh is low. Our tourism sector is still lagging behind compared to other countries. The government is prioritizing sustainable and green tourism. Where various initiatives are being taken to maintain a balance between economic growth, environmental sustainability and cultural preservation.

Industry Advisor Adilur Rahman Khan said this at the inauguration of a four-day international workshop titled “Workshop on Sustainable Practices in Green Tourism” at a hotel in Dhaka on Monday (August 4, 2025). The event was chaired by the Secretary of the Ministry of Industries, Mr. Md. Obaidur Rahman and the Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), Mr. Chowdhury Ashiq Mahmud Bin Harun, were present.

This workshop, jointly organized by the National Productivity Organization (NPO), Bangladesh and the Asian Productivity Organization (APO), Japan, is attended by representatives, policymakers, researchers and entrepreneurs from 24 TAPO countries including Bangladesh. The welcome address was delivered by the Director General of the National Productivity Organization (NPO), Md. Nurul Alam.

At the event, the Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), Mr. Chowdhury Ashiq Mahmud Bin Harun, said that green tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors in the world. The size of eco-tourism in the world is 600 million dollars, which is limited to small communities. There are many opportunities for sustainable and green development in Bangladesh.

The four-day international workshop will feature 15 sessions on tourism, sustainable eco-tourism, and climate change, where representatives from member countries of the Asian Productivity Organization (APO) will present research and papers on sustainable tourism.
