At least nine people, including five Bangladeshi nationals, died in a massive fire at a hotel in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, early on Wednesday (August 19, 2026). Six more Bangladeshi nationals were injured in the incident.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that officials of the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata reached the spot immediately after receiving the news of the fire and tried to collect information about the dead and injured.
According to information provided by local authorities, a total of nine people have died in the fire so far. The local police have confirmed the identities of five of them as Bangladeshi nationals. It is learnt that four of the deceased are members of the same family. However, the local authorities have not yet confirmed the identities of the others who died.
The Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata has already contacted the families of the deceased Bangladeshis.
Meanwhile, six Bangladeshi nationals injured in the fire have been discharged from the hospital after being given primary treatment. The officials of the Deputy High Commission are in regular contact with the hospital and local police to ensure round-the-clock assistance to Bangladeshi nationals.
Following the incident, the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission has launched a round-the-clock helpline. The Deputy High Commission is taking all necessary measures to provide necessary assistance to the Bangladeshi nationals affected by the accident.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata are in close contact with the relevant Indian authorities regarding the situation.
