After a long 35 years, the presidential election of Bangladesh is being held today (August 20, 2026) through direct voting of the members of the National Assembly. Voting will be held in the session room of the National Assembly from 2 pm to 5 pm.
This time, two candidates are contesting in the presidential election. They are – Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) nominated candidate and former Secretary General of the party Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and the candidate of the 11-party unity led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Chairman Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed Bir Bikram.
According to Election Commission sources, the members of the National Assembly will vote in the presidential election. Voting will be held in the session room of the Parliament building as per the scheduled time.
The electoral officer and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of the presidential election, AMM Nasir Uddin, said that all necessary preparations have already been made to conduct the election in a fair, beautiful and orderly manner.
It is worth noting that the last presidential election in Bangladesh was held in 1991 through direct voting by members of parliament. After a long 35 years, special importance has been created in the political arena surrounding the organization of the presidential election through direct voting by members of parliament.
