Bangladesh, Gambia stress on strengthening trade and cooperation

Emphasis has been placed on further strengthening bilateral cooperation in trade, investment and various fields between Bangladesh and Gambia.

The matter was discussed when Bangladesh State Minister for Foreign Affairs Hosne Ara Begum, Non-Resident High Commissioner of Gambia to Bangladesh, High Commissioner Mustafa Zawara, paid a courtesy call on her at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday (August 18).

During the meeting, satisfaction was expressed over the long-standing friendly relations and growing cooperation between Bangladesh and Gambia. The State Minister for Foreign Affairs commended the Gambian government for filing and actively pursuing the genocide case against Myanmar at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). He said that the successful resolution of the case will play an important role in increasing their confidence in the voluntary repatriation of the Rohingyas to their own country.

Both sides expressed satisfaction with the mutual cooperation between Bangladesh and Gambia in various multilateral forums including the United Nations and its constituent organizations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Commonwealth and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

During the meeting, the State Minister for Foreign Affairs urged the High Commissioner to take necessary initiatives to increase trade, commercial activities, information and communication technology (ICT), agriculture, pharmaceuticals, jute and jute products, light engineering, shipbuilding and people-to-people contacts between the two countries.

He also emphasized the need to increase visits and exchange of views by high-level business delegations between the two countries to increase bilateral trade and investment.

On the other hand, High Commissioner Mustafa Zawara praised the contribution of Bangladesh’s ICT experts in implementing digital public service infrastructure in Gambia. He also requested that initiatives be taken to quickly conclude the Political Consultation Agreement between the two countries.

During the meeting, both sides expressed optimism about deepening and multidimensionalizing the existing relations between Bangladesh and Gambia.
