Today is the 45th martyrdom anniversary of former President of Bangladesh, proclaimer of independence, one of the sector commanders of the Liberation War and founder of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). On the occasion of the day, BNP and its affiliated organizations are holding extensive programs across the country, including the capital.
Ziaur Rahman passed away in a murder at the Chittagong Circuit House on May 30, 1981. His sudden death cast a shadow of deep grief across the country at that time. The large number of people participating in his funeral held in Dhaka is considered one of the largest mass gatherings in history.
BNP has taken an eight-day program from May 25 to June 1 to mark the martyrdom anniversary. During this time, special posters have been published nationwide, party leaders and activists have been wearing black badges, and special supplements have been published in various newspapers and online media.
As part of the program, the national and party flags were kept at half-mast at the BNP central office in Nayapaltan and party offices across the country at 6 am on Saturday and the black flag was hoisted.
On the occasion of the day, the party’s central leaders led by the Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman paid tribute and paid homage to the tomb of martyred President Ziaur Rahman. Later, a prayer and milad mahfil was held there at the initiative of the Nationalist Ulema Party.
Meanwhile, food and clothes are being distributed among the poor and needy people in different police stations of the capital and in different districts and metropolises of the country. In addition, discussion meetings, memorial meetings and prayer mahfils have been organized at the local level.
A discussion meeting is scheduled to be held tomorrow at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) auditorium in Ramna, the capital, at the initiative of BNP to mark the anniversary.
Ziaur Rahman played an important role as the commander of Z Force in the Liberation War of Bangladesh. Later, he founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and took the initiative to strengthen the trend of multi-party democracy in the country’s political arena. His role in promoting the idea of establishing the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) with the aim of increasing regional cooperation is also mentioned at various times.
Every year on May 30, BNP, its affiliate organizations and people from different classes and professions observe the martyrdom anniversary of martyred President Ziaur Rahman through various programs. This year too, the day is being celebrated nationwide with due dignity and solemnity.
