Three-day state mourning declared on Begum Khaleda Zia’s death: Chief Advisor in address to nation

The Chief Advisor has expressed deep grief over the death of Begum Khaleda Zia, one of the top leaders of Bangladesh’s democratic politics, former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson. In an address to the nation on Tuesday (December 30, 2025), he declared three days of state mourning on her death and a one-day general holiday on the day of her funeral.

At the beginning of his speech, the Chief Advisor said that the entire nation is silent in deep grief and pain today. Stating that the nation has lost a great guardian in the death of Begum Khaleda Zia, he expressed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the entire nation to her family members, political colleagues and countless workers and supporters.

He prayed to Almighty Allah to give everyone the strength to overcome this deep grief and grant forgiveness to the departed soul of Begum Khaleda Zia.

In his speech, the Chief Advisor said that Begum Khaleda Zia was an extremely glorious figure in Bangladeshi politics. Her role in the struggle to establish democracy, multi-party political culture and people’s rights will remain indelible in history. He mentioned that her uncompromising leadership against tyranny and fascism has repeatedly shown the nation the way out of undemocratic situations.

He further said that the nation will forever remember Begum Khaleda Zia’s contribution to the country and the nation with respect. Her long political life, people-oriented leadership and steadfast role in protecting independence and sovereignty will be unforgettable. He also commented that the void of such a visionary and pure patriotic leader will not be filled.

Calling on the countrymen in this time of mourning, the Chief Advisor said that everyone should remain united and be vigilant so that no one can attempt instability or sabotage. He humbly requested everyone to maintain order in all mourning programs.

In the final part of his speech, he said that it is very important to keep emotions in check during this time of mourning, show patience, and cooperate with all those involved in carrying out all the formalities, including the funeral.

He concluded his speech by praying to Almighty Allah for patience, strength, and unity for the countrymen.
