The goal of education is not to obtain certificates, but to create skilled and moral people: Dr. Mahdi Amin

The main purpose of education in Bangladesh is not just to obtain certificates, but to develop moral, skilled and functional human resources—who are able to compete in the domestic and global labor markets—has commented BNP Advisor and Acting Chairman Dr. Mahdi Amin.

He made these remarks at a panel discussion titled “Education of Bangladesh: in the age of Artificial Intelligence” organized by the Youth Council of Bangladesh at the Amari Hotel in Gulshan on Sunday (December 21, 2025).

Dr. Mahdi Amin said, “There are huge employment opportunities in countries like Japan, South Korea and China. But the biggest obstacle for our youth to go there is not lack of desire—it is the lack of language skills and job-appropriate training.”

He said that BNP believes that the main strength of education is teachers. “This is why we want to work on the ‘One Teacher, One Tablet’ policy, so that teachers can learn regularly and provide better quality education to students. Technology is not a substitute for teachers—it empowers teachers.”

Dr. Mahdi Amin added, “Our goal is to convert brain drain into brain circulation. Young people will acquire international skills, and then return to work with those skills in the country—this is the path to future development.”

In future education reforms, BNP will prioritize talent identification, coordination between industry and educational institutions, and investment in people over infrastructure, he said. “Sustainable development does not come only with concrete—it comes through investment in people.”

In the panel discussion, he also said that artificial intelligence can make the education system more inclusive and effective, if it is implemented properly. This requires policy reforms, teacher training, and direct linkages between education and the labor market.

The Youth Council of Bangladesh believes that such dialogue will play an important role in making Bangladesh’s education system timely, technology-based, and sustainable.

Other participants in the panel discussion included Bobby Hajjaj, Chairman, Nationalist Democratic Movement (NDM), Shahir Chowdhury, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Shikho; Shafqat Rabbi, columnist, banker and educationist, founder, Centrist Nation.
