Chief Whip of the Bangladesh National Parliament Md. Nurul Islam said, the beauty of democracy is competition. The upcoming presidential election is not an election to follow the rules.
He said these things while briefing the media after submitting the nomination papers for the upcoming presidential election on behalf of the BNP and the party alliance to the Election Commission on Thursday (August 13, 2026). Senior leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), government ministers, whips of the National Parliament and members of parliament were present at the time.
The Chief Whip said that the party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been nominated by the party in the presidential election to be held on August 20 and his nomination paper was submitted today. The proposer of the nomination paper was the party’s standing committee member Dr. Abdul Moin Khan and Gayeshwar Chandra Roy signed as a supporter. 349 members of the National Assembly will be able to exercise their voting rights in the presidential election.
The Chief Whip said, “The beauty of democracy is competition. The nomination papers of candidates have been submitted from the opposition alliance. We welcome it.”
He said, this is not a ‘rule-based election’. The election is being held exactly as an election should be held according to the constitution and the RPO. He also mentioned that this parliament, formed through a fair election after a long 17-year movement, is working to fulfill the expectations of the people of the country.
Government committed to implementing every letter of the July Charter
Regarding constitutional reform, the Chief Whip said, the government is committed to implementing every letter, comma, semicolon and hyphen of the ‘July Charter’. There is no need to rewrite the constitution; the constitution will be reformed through necessary amendments.
He said, “If we change even a comma, that will be reform. We want to work with everyone’s opinions to ensure a lasting constitution for the next generation.”
The Chief Whip said that constitutional reform is not in the interest of any individual or party; rather, its goal is to ensure an effective, sustainable, and long-lasting constitutional framework for future generations.
