State Minister for Foreign Affairs calls for strong global action to protect civilians, uphold international humanitarian law and repatriate Rohingya

Diplomatic Desk:

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam has called for more effective international action to ensure the protection of civilians, uphold international humanitarian law and repatriate Rohingyas to their homeland, Myanmar. He made the call while addressing the High-Level Panel Discussion of the 2026 ECOSOC Humanitarian Affairs Segment at the UN Headquarters in New York on Thursday (June 18, 2026).

Stressing the need to ensure accountability for violations of international humanitarian law, invest more in conflict prevention and strengthen coordination between humanitarian, peace and development activities, the State Minister for Foreign Affairs highlighted the increasing technology-based harassment and abuse against women and girls and reiterated the call for the establishment of a global platform to address such threats.

The State Minister expressed deep concern about the negative impact of the ongoing funding crisis on Rohingya women and girls. He stressed the need for continued international cooperation to find a sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis and called for their speedy return to their home country, Myanmar.

On the sidelines of the event, the State Minister paid a courtesy call on Vietnam’s Deputy Foreign Minister Dr. Nguyen Minh Vu. During the meeting, both sides exchanged views on issues of mutual interest, bilateral cooperation and various aspects of strengthening cooperation in the multilateral arena.
