Protecting National Interests, Sovereignty, and Self-Respect: The Commitment of a Future Bangladesh – Prime Minister Tarique Rahman

Desk Report:

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has identified the protection of national interests, sovereignty, and self-respect as the core commitment for the Bangladesh of the future. He stated that Bangladesh seeks to strengthen its bonds of friendship and cooperation with all nations across the globe, based on the principles of mutual respect and equality.

The Prime Minister made these remarks on Sunday morning (October 18, 2026) at the Savar Cantonment, during a ceremony where the ‘National Standard’ (national flag) was presented to several battalions and regiments of the Bangladesh Army.

The Prime Minister noted that the government continues its efforts to transform the armed forces into a more technology-driven, skilled, disciplined, professional, and modern entity. He emphasized the importance of building a modern and capable armed force, not only to safeguard the nation’s independence and sovereignty but also to ensure national security.

Stating that the strength of a modern armed force is not limited merely to its weaponry, equipment, or manpower, Tarique Rahman remarked that its true power lies in discipline, competence, leadership, moral integrity, training, and the trust of the people. Above all, he stressed, the importance of the chain of command is paramount.

Describing the presentation of the National Standard as a significant recognition of a unit’s professional achievements, the Prime Minister said that it is more than just a flag; it is a symbol of the unit’s history, traditions, discipline, sacrifices, professionalism, and its unwavering commitment to the nation.

He further noted that the proud fluttering of the national flag serves as a constant reminder of the country’s independence, sovereignty, and the sacrifices made by countless individuals.

The Prime Minister added that receiving the National Standard signifies a renewed pledge to carry out assigned duties with even greater dedication and sincerity. Upholding the honor of the national flag, he emphasized, is a sacred duty for every soldier.

During the ceremony, the National Standard was awarded to the 7th and 32nd Field Regiment Artillery, the 25th Air Defence Regiment, the 9th Engineer Battalion, the 56th and 57th East Bengal Regiments, and the President Guard Regiment, in recognition of their professional success and distinguished contributions. The event was attended by cabinet members and advisors, the Army Chief, representatives of the diplomatic corps, former and serving officers of the armed forces, and military personnel of various ranks.
