27 Years of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation in the Service of Humanity

Desk Report:

Since its establishment in 1999, the Ziaur Rahman Foundation (ZRF) has been working with the objective of serving humanity and promoting public welfare.

Over the past 27 years, the organization has pursued its mission through various initiatives in healthcare, education, agriculture, environmental conservation, disaster response, and the improvement of the quality of life for the underprivileged.

This special supplement, published to mark the Foundation’s 27th anniversary, highlights the organization’s humanitarian activities, significant achievements, and future commitments. It includes messages from the Foundation’s President, Tarique Rahman, and Vice-President, Dr. Zubaida Rahman; assessments from the directors; and greetings from the convener and member secretary of the anniversary celebration committee. Those involved with the Foundation have expressed their hope that the ZRF will continue its journey, driven by a steadfast commitment to stand by the people, assist the helpless, and work for the marginalized segments of society.

— Message from the President of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation —

On the occasion of the 27th anniversary of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation, I extend my sincere greetings and congratulations to all the professionals associated with the Foundation—including physicians, agriculturalists, engineers, journalists, educators, volunteers, well-wishers, and everyone dedicated to the service of humanity.

The Ziaur Rahman Foundation (ZRF) began its journey in 1999 with a firm resolve to work for the welfare of the people. The core mission of the ZRF is to uphold human dignity and extend a helping hand to the helpless and the underprivileged. A primary responsibility the ZRF has embraced is to support those who are marginalized and living in extreme poverty—individuals who, due to a lack of financial means, are otherwise unable to access essential medical care.

The 27-year journey has not always been smooth. The Foundation’s regular activities faced significant obstacles due to various challenges—most notably during more than a decade and a half of fascist rule and exploitation. Yet, the commitment to humanity and the love for people—the very principles upon which the ZRF was founded—have never wavered. Even amidst adversity, the dedicated staff and physicians of this organization have steadfastly continued their efforts to stand by the people.

Whenever disaster has struck, they have rushed to the side of those in distress. Whether during floods, cyclones, pandemics, or other humanitarian crises—times when people feel utterly helpless—the staff and volunteers of the ZRF (Ziaur Rahman Foundation) have stepped forward, setting aside concerns for their own safety. For over a decade and a half—even during the arduous period of the anti-fascist movement—the organization’s members courageously provided medical care to save the lives of those participating in the movement and those who had been injured.

On this glorious anniversary of the organization’s founding, I wish to especially honor those physicians and healthcare workers who have embraced service to humanity not merely as a profession, but as a profound responsibility toward their fellow human beings. Their contributions—risking their own lives to provide care to the sick, the injured, and the vulnerable during such challenging times—can never be forgotten. What could be a nobler endeavor than saving human lives?

I believe that the true strength of an organization lies not in its buildings, its financial resources, or its structural framework, but in its commitment to serving others. The greatest achievement of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation is this enduring spirit—the resolve to stand by people during their darkest hours—which remains as steadfast today as ever.

I am firmly convinced that, just as it has in the past, the Ziaur Rahman Foundation will continue to expand its scope of work and broaden the reach of its services in the days to come.

The organization’s initiatives—spanning medical care, education, agriculture, disaster response, support for underprivileged yet meritorious students, and the upliftment of marginalized communities—must be further invigorated. Arranging medical treatment for someone in need, placing books in the hands of an impoverished student, supporting a farmer, or extending a helping hand to a family devastated by disaster—each of these acts serves as a shining example of humanity.

Therefore, on the 27th anniversary of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation, let us pledge: we will stand by those in sorrow, step forward to assist those in danger, and—to the very best of our ability—strive to bring a smile to the face of every person in need. I extend my sincere gratitude and respect to everyone who, for the past 27 years, has silently, selflessly, and courageously carried forward this journey of service to humanity.

Let us raise the banner of humanity even higher. Let us embrace service to others as our identity, and humanity as the inspiration for our path forward. May the 27th anniversary of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation be successful and meaningful. May Allah grant us all the ability to work for the welfare of humanity.

-Tarique Rahman
President,
Ziaur Rahman Foundation

—Message from the Vice President of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation—

Established on October 18, 1999, to serve suffering humanity, the Ziaur Rahman Foundation (ZRF) has since expanded its scope, bringing together individuals from diverse professions under one umbrella and fostering a spirit of mutual trust and confidence. As a non-political, non-governmental, and philanthropic organization, it has consistently provided services to the public—a commitment clearly witnessed by the people even during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As an organization dedicated to public welfare, it works tirelessly for the betterment of humanity. At the core of every initiative lie a love for people, a commitment to human dignity, and a resolve to build a self-reliant Bangladesh. Today, the Ziaur Rahman Foundation stands as a symbol of trust for the nation. Its endeavors have earned recognition and praise both at home and abroad.

Initiatives have included a virtual science fair—”In Search of Future Scientists”—a specialized medical camp for residents of Korail suffering from heart and respiratory ailments, the distribution of awareness leaflets and mosquito nets to combat dengue, medical treatment for children injured in the ‘Milestone’ tragedy, and the renovation of primary schools. Furthermore, the foundation has organized tree-planting programs at various educational institutions across Bangladesh, including the University of Dhaka, to promote environmental conservation. Notably, the third science fair organized by the foundation, titled “In Search of Future Scientists 2026,” is currently underway.

The foundation’s efforts extend far beyond mere social work; they have inspired everyone involved to embrace the guiding principle: “Wherever there is good work, there is ZRF (Ziaur Rahman Foundation).” These initiatives include distributing books to underprivileged yet meritorious children, awarding scholarships to students who achieve a GPA-5, providing health check-ups, medication, and educational materials to Madrasa students, and offering specialized health screenings and medicine to children at the ‘Surabhi School’—an institution established for children with special needs and those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Other notable projects include organizing free eye camps for students at a school for the deaf and mute in Bogura, establishing volunteer teams to ensure regular healthcare access for residents of Bhashantek, Sattala, and Korail, and conducting free cataract surgeries at an eye camp held on the grounds of the Bhashantek Government Primary School.

Since its inception, the Ziaur Rahman Foundation has solidified its standing as a trusted humanitarian organization. It continues to carry out extensive work across various sectors vital to human life, including healthcare, education, scientific advancement, agriculture, environmental protection, women’s empowerment, and disaster response. We firmly believe that small-scale initiatives and collective effort can drive significant, positive change in people’s lives.

As a unique platform for humanitarian service, the organization continues to advance along the path envisioned by its founder, Mr. Tarique Rahman. On the occasion of our 27th anniversary, I extend my heartfelt greetings and congratulations to all the members, volunteers, and well-wishers associated with the Foundation. May our journey continue, guided by a commitment to love for humanity, a sense of responsibility, and a dedication to service. May every initiative we undertake open new horizons of comfort, opportunity, and self-reliance in people’s lives.

In closing, on behalf of the Foundation, I wish everyone good health and all the best. Allah Hafiz.

— Dr. Zubaida Rahman
Vice-President
Ziaur Rahman Foundation

— 27 Years in the Service of Humanity —

Professor Dr. Farhad Halim Donar:
In 1999, Mr. Tarique Rahman conceived the idea of establishing a foundation in his father’s name—the Ziaur Rahman Foundation (ZRF). His primary objective was to separate humanitarian work from the political sphere, focusing instead on what could be done for the common people. The journey of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation began with this vision. It started with a medical camp in Dighulia, located in the Terokhada Upazila of Khulna district. Subsequently, he recognized that to foster the socio-economic development of the common people, it was essential to improve their financial standing.

During this period, he was actively organizing grassroots-level structures across the country, holding gatherings at the grassroots level. At these events, he would provide marginalized individuals in each district with resources such as ducks, chickens, saplings, cattle, and goats. His core intent was to help these individuals achieve financial improvement and social stability, thereby setting the wheels of the economy in motion. While these projects were not necessarily large-scale, their primary purpose was to inspire others. He hoped that by witnessing these efforts, others would be encouraged to undertake similar initiatives—and, in reality, that is exactly what happened. As he began distributing livestock and saplings, people in regions where the ZRF did not yet have a presence also began providing similar support to marginalized individuals in their own communities. His activities continued in this manner. In the foundation’s inaugural committee, he was the only non-physician; the organization began its journey with 21 other members, all of whom were doctors. This journey has continued without interruption.

Under the guidance of Tarique Rahman, the Ziaur Rahman Foundation (ZRF) launched a scholarship program in 2005 to support meritorious yet financially disadvantaged students, helping them sustain their education. The scholarships were first officially awarded in 2005 at the LGED building in Dhaka. Although operations were temporarily suspended due to political upheavals, the program was later revived and expanded to reach a broader group of beneficiaries. Under the leadership of the foundation’s President, Mr. Tarique Rahman, and Vice-President, Dr. Zubaida Rahman, the program was resumed in 2023. Scholarships were provided to meritorious, financially disadvantaged students across the country, as well as to 19 children of BNP activists who had suffered due to their participation in democratic movements.

Providing Healthcare to the Vulnerable
The ZRF regularly organizes free medical camps during national disasters, crises, and other emergencies. These camps offer patients quality medical care, essential medications, and health-related consultations. Recently, such services have been provided in Rupsha (Khulna), Jatrabari (Dhaka), the Korail slum, Gazipur, Rajshahi, Chattogram, and Bogura. These camps are particularly vital for individuals who otherwise lack access to regular healthcare services.

A healthcare camp was organized at the family residence of Rahman in Bogura. On October 18 of last year, coinciding with the 26th anniversary of the Foundation, approximately 7,000 patients received medical care at this camp. The Foundation’s physicians and members executed the operations of this large-scale health camp with great success. Additionally, a free medical camp was held in the Kakrail slum of Dhaka to provide treatment for various ailments, including eye conditions exacerbated by the cold winter weather. Another eye-care camp was organized in Sylhet, where thousands of patients received medical services.

Restoring Normal Life for Patients with Cleft Lip/Palate
At the initiative of political leader Tarique Rahman, the ZRF (Zia Relief Foundation)—in collaboration with German specialist surgeons—organized plastic and reconstructive surgery camps in Bogura, Khulna, and Gaibandha. Through these camps, approximately 450 patients—including those with cleft lips, cleft palates, and burn injuries—underwent free surgical procedures. Many individuals, who previously lacked the financial means or access to medical facilities for such surgeries, have been able to begin a new life thanks to these camps. This initiative continues to operate across various districts.

Care for Asthma Patients
According to government estimates from 2003, approximately 7 million people in Bangladesh suffer from asthma. Given that a single integrated asthma center is insufficient to meet the needs of such a large number of patients, and recognizing this critical requirement, the ZRF—under the guidance of the humanitarian-minded Tarique Rahman—established asthma centers in Bogura (2003) and Chattogram (2004). To date, 5,871 patients in Bogura and 3,119 patients in Chattogram have received successful medical treatment. These services remain active today.

Artificial Limb Replacement
Under the guidance and overall supervision of Tarique Rahman—a dedicated servant of humanity—the ZRF has been conducting an artificial limb replacement program for individuals who have lost limbs due to accidents or during democratic movements.

This support has been provided since the organization’s inception, enabling many people to regain their mobility and return to their professional lives. Furthermore, the ZRF has consistently stood by the families of martyrs, as well as the families of those who have gone missing or have been subjected to persecution, and remains committed to continuing this support. ‘Kamal’ Pure Water Supply
For the residents of the Daser Kandi area in Dhaka, the lack of access to clean water has been a long-standing issue. Water contamination had reached critical levels due to a flawed sewage system. Under the directive of Tarique Rahman, and with the collaboration of the Bogura Rural Development Academy, the Ziaur Rahman Foundation (ZRF) launched the ‘Kamal’ water project—named ‘Kamal’ after the nickname of the late President Ziaur Rahman. Approximately 120 families are now benefiting from access to clean water through this project. Additionally, 160 families in the area are participating in a micro-credit scheme. This initiative is playing a direct role in improving the quality of life for the local community.

Services During the COVID-19 Pandemic
During the COVID-19 pandemic, when people were confined to their homes out of fear for their lives, professionals associated with the Ziaur Rahman Foundation—including doctors and agricultural experts—risked their own safety to deliver oxygen cylinders, personal protective equipment (PPE), and essential medicines directly to the doorsteps of those affected by the virus. Furthermore, a hotline-based healthcare service was established for those who remained largely housebound.

ZRF in Times of Crisis
Following the directives of Tarique Rahman, the ZRF has undertaken various initiatives, including providing relief to flood victims in Feni in 2024, offering medical care to those injured during the July movement, supporting students and teachers affected by the ‘Milestone’ tragedy, conducting nationwide tree-planting campaigns, raising awareness about the prevention of dengue and anthrax, promoting heart disease prevention, and providing Eid gifts and healthcare services to madrasas and orphanages.

Veterinary Medical Camps
Under the guidance of Tarique Rahman, the Foundation has organized free veterinary medical camps across the country. As part of this ongoing effort, a medical camp was held on August 30, 2025, at Zahir Uddin High School in Sutiyakhali village, Mymensingh district. During the event, saplings of fruit-bearing and medicinal trees were distributed among local farmers. Additionally, the camp provided free medical treatment and medication for the livestock belonging to the village farmers. On November 15, 2025, a free veterinary medical camp and a distribution event for fruit-bearing tree saplings were organized under the initiative of the Foundation in Banshkhali, Chattogram. Additionally, on October 4, 2026, a similar event was held in the Gowainghat Upazila of Sylhet, which also included the distribution of AWD (Alternate Wetting and Drying) kits among farmers.

Cleanliness Program
Dr. Zubaida Rahman, Vice President of the Foundation, has a profound understanding of how the indiscriminate disposal of waste and polythene poses a threat to public health. When such waste is ingested by livestock, it can lead to the introduction of various harmful pathogens into the animals, ultimately rendering their meat hazardous for human consumption. In light of this, and under her direction, cleanliness programs were carried out in several locations, including Feni and Khulna.

…is conducted. Prizes are awarded to the winners of the final competition on the day of the Foundation’s founding anniversary.

Extending its reach beyond national borders, the ZRF has also engaged in international humanitarian initiatives. To assist those affected by the devastating earthquake in Turkey, a team comprising ZRF members delivered blankets to the Turkish Embassy in Dhaka.

In conclusion, the 27-year journey of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation is, in essence, a history of human welfare, compassion, development, and service. The Foundation has undertaken practical initiatives across various sectors—including education, healthcare, water, agriculture, social security, disaster response, and humanitarian aid. It continues to stand by the marginalized segments of society, playing a vital role in improving their quality of life. Committed to the cause of humanity, this organization will continue to work for the people of the nation, expanding its service to those in distress on an even larger scale. With Tarique Rahman—a leader defined by his humanitarian values—serving as its President, the Foundation’s activities are naturally poised for further expansion. It will continue to broaden its reach, extending its programs to benefit all citizens, from those in remote, outlying areas to those in urban centers. Driven by the deep-seated commitment to public service of a highly capable team—comprising accomplished professionals from diverse fields—these people-oriented initiatives will continue, just as they have in the past. On this auspicious day, we pray to the Almighty to grant good health to our beloved President, Mr. Tarique Rahman. All of us at the ZRF are steadfast in our resolve to elevate this humanitarian institution—founded by Tarique Rahman—to unprecedented heights. We remain dedicated to bringing Tarique Rahman’s philosophy of humanity into the hearts of every citizen in the country.

27 Years of Achievement, Future Responsibilities, and Our Commitment:

Professor Dr. Mostafa Aziz Suman:

The Ziaur Rahman Foundation (ZRF)—a non-political, public-welfare, and humanitarian organization—has completed 27 years since its inception. Under the guidance of its President, Tarique Rahman, the ZRF maintains that serving humanity is not merely a formality; it is a fundamental human responsibility. Standing by people during their times of hardship is the defining hallmark of this organization.

Since its inception, ZRF has worked tirelessly in areas such as healthcare, education, disaster response, rehabilitation, and social development. Initiatives such as the Asthma Center, a pediatric healthcare facility in Bogura, the distribution of poultry and goats to empower rural women, and the installation of safe drinking water tanks in Dasherkandi—a region plagued by severe water scarcity—reflect the Foundation’s commitment to meeting basic human needs and improving the quality of life.

The scope of ZRF’s activities is vast: organizing hundreds of health camps across the country, conducting eye camps for cataract patients, raising awareness and providing support for dengue prevention, holding veterinary camps to protect livestock, and extending a helping hand to those affected by floods, other natural disasters, and major accidents. Notably, at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization mobilized doctors and volunteers to deliver essential aid.

The Foundation’s efforts to provide rehabilitation, medical treatment, and support to individuals who suffered limb loss or severe physical injuries during the July 2024 mass uprising and subsequent political repression serve as a significant example of humanitarian responsibility.

The effort to reach even the most remote corners of the country to deliver Eid gifts to the families of those who were martyred in July demonstrates that service to humanity transcends geographical boundaries.

Through its scholarship program, ZRF has supported numerous meritorious students, many of whom have now established themselves as doctors, engineers, and military officers. This success is not merely individual; it reflects the long-term social impact of a humanitarian initiative.

ZRF’s efforts to engage the younger generation in science, innovation, and creative thinking are also particularly noteworthy. Science fairs, organized under the initiative of Dr. Zubaida Rahman, have provided students with opportunities to apply the knowledge gained from their textbooks toward solving real-world problems. Through the participation of students from various educational institutions, these fairs—featuring science project displays, the presentation of innovative ideas, Q&A sessions, and the exchange of experiences—foster a spirit of inquiry, teamwork, and leadership qualities among the youth. A science fair is more than just an exhibition; it serves as an effective platform to prepare the future generation to become rational, technology-conscious citizens who are actively engaged in nation-building.

In this endeavor, the image of Tarique Rahman emerges as a symbolic representation of humane leadership—one that integrates a sense of responsibility toward people, trust in the youth, and a firm commitment to building a knowledge-based society. Within his vision for leadership, the humanitarian initiatives of the ZRF (Ziaur Rahman Foundation) extend a helping hand to those in times of distress, while projects like science fairs empower the youth to shape their own futures.

Through initiatives in health, humanitarian aid, and public welfare—both nationally and internationally—the ZRF seeks to broaden the scope of its service to humanity. Efforts focused on health awareness, environmental issues, access to safe water, maternal and child health, medical support for the vulnerable, science education, and the cultivation of a scientific mindset among the younger generation are vital for the future.

May the journey of the Ziaur Rahman Foundation—dedicated to the people, to humanity, and to a knowledge-based future—continue to flourish. On the occasion of the ZRF’s 27th anniversary, I extend my sincere greetings to all well-wishers, volunteers, physicians, donors, educators, students, and partners.
