Diplomatic Desk:
Deep respect was paid to the martyrs during a commemoration marking the 65th anniversary of the crackdown on Algerian protesters in Paris, France, on October 17, 1961. The event highlighted the history of Algeria’s struggle for independence, the contributions of the Algerian diaspora, the pursuit of historical justice, and the friendly relations between Algeria and Bangladesh.

In his address, the Algerian Ambassador described the tragic events of October 17, 1961, as a significant chapter in the nation’s collective consciousness, defined by sacrifice, dignity, and the fight for independence. He noted that Algeria officially observes this date as “National Emigrant Day.”

He further explained that, in 2021—at the initiative of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune—a tradition was established to observe a minute of silence across Algeria and at its diplomatic missions abroad to honor those who perished. The theme for 2026, “From Profound Memory to the Horizons of the Future,” bridges the painful history of the past with the construction of a future rooted in justice and human rights.
The History of the Crackdown on Algerians in Paris
Recounting the events of October 17, 1961, the Algerian Ambassador stated that Algerians had gathered for a peaceful protest against a discriminatory curfew imposed by French authorities. The French police responded with a violent crackdown, resulting in numerous injuries and loss of life. Historical accounts indicate that many were subjected to torture, and some were even drowned in the Seine River.
The address noted that the funds sent home by Algerian workers in France served as a vital lifeline for the National Liberation Front (FLN) during the struggle for national liberation. The Ambassador pointed out that the suppression of the protest was also an attempt to weaken these crucial financial and political ties. International Solidarity and the Achievement of Independence
The Algerian Ambassador stated that the killings in Paris triggered a widespread international reaction and played a pivotal role in shaping public opinion against French colonial rule. Robust international discourse surrounding the right to self-determination further accelerated Algeria’s quest for independence.
He added that the persistent efforts of historians, human rights activists, and international organizations have been instrumental in uncovering the historical truth of these events and advocating for justice. It was also noted that the French state has since acknowledged the incident as an unforgivable crime.
The discussion also touched upon the 1962 Evian Accords—a key milestone in Algeria’s struggle for independence—and the country’s formal attainment of independence on July 5 of that same year.
The Contribution of the Algerian Diaspora to National Development
The Ambassador highlighted that the Algerian diaspora has historically played a vital role in the movement for independence. Today, they continue to contribute to the nation’s development, the exchange of knowledge, and its ongoing modernization.
In this context, he mentioned the establishment of the “High Council of the National Scientific Community Abroad,” an initiative designed to harness the expertise of Algerian scientists and specialists living overseas for the benefit of national development. This council serves as a significant platform for integrating the global experience and skills of the Algerian diaspora into the country’s progress.
Emphasizing the Historic Bond Between Bangladesh and Algeria
Concluding his remarks, the Algerian Ambassador underscored the historic friendship and mutual respect shared by the people of Bangladesh and Algeria, as well as their common aspirations for independence and human dignity.
He noted that both nations share a history of struggle against colonial rule and oppression. The sacrifices made by the people of both countries in pursuit of freedom, justice, and human dignity have forged a deep, historic connection between them.
The Ambassador expressed his gratitude to the distinguished guests, diplomats, journalists, members of the Algerian diaspora, and all staff involved in organizing the event. He further expressed a hope that, by honoring the sacrifices of the martyrs, both nations might continue to build a peaceful, prosperous, and bright future.
