Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has called upon the international logistics company DP World to come forward with investments in various sectors in Bangladesh, including the establishment of free trade zones and rail-based Inland Container Depots (ICDs).
The Prime Minister made this call on Thursday evening at the Secretariat while meeting with a delegation led by Essa Kazim, Chairman of the Board of Directors of DP World.
During the meeting, discussions were held on various matters of mutual interest, including the expansion of trade and investment between Bangladesh and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), port management, and the development of the logistics sector.
The meeting also covered the 15-year concession agreement signed between Bangladesh and DP World for the operation and modernization of the Chattogram Container Terminal. Stakeholders anticipate that this partnership will facilitate the terminal’s modernization, enhance operational efficiency, and further strengthen the capacity of the country’s port and logistics infrastructure.
The Prime Minister inquired about the DP World delegation’s interest in new investments, specifically regarding the establishment of free trade zones and rail-based Inland Container Depots in Bangladesh. In response, the delegation expressed their keen interest in collaborating and investing in these sectors.
The Prime Minister urged international investors, including DP World, to come forward and contribute to the development of the trade and logistics sectors by leveraging Bangladesh’s investment potential.
According to experts, international investment in free trade zones, rail-based container transport, and modern port management could help accelerate the country’s import-export activities. It could also create opportunities to reduce logistics costs, improve efficiency in goods transportation, and enhance Bangladesh’s capacity in regional trade.
