State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj said, we do not want just certificate-based education, we want work-oriented education. We want to create an education system where teachers listen to students and prepare them for their future careers.
The State Minister said these things while addressing the chief guest at the seminar titled ‘Higher Education Landscape of Bangladesh: Contemporary Thoughts’ organized by the Bangladesh Society for Private University Academics (BSPUA) and North South University at the Syndicate Hall of North South University in Bashundhara, Dhaka on Monday (March 9, 2026). The seminar was chaired by Eastern University Vice-Chancellor Professor Farid Ahmed Sobhani, and North South University Vice-Chancellor Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury spoke as a special guest. Vice-Chancellors of various universities and senior members of the Board of Trustees were also present at the seminar.
Referring to the reform steps taken by the Bangladesh government in the education sector, the State Minister said that today’s students will take the reins of democracy in the future and lead Bangladesh. To this end, the government is committed to implementing all kinds of action plans.
In his speech, the State Minister highlighted the current challenges and prospects of higher education and said that traditional higher education has not achieved the desired success in producing skilled human resources and the past education commissions have also not been able to play the expected role in meeting the needs of the nation. In this context, a timely paper on Education Philosophy has been submitted to the Prime Minister.
He also said that in addition to ensuring transparency and accountability of public universities, the scope of existing regulations or controls of the University Grants Commission (UGC) will be reduced and made more flexible to pave the way for the development and creativity of private universities.
Laying special emphasis on the dignity of teachers, the State Minister said, the role of teachers in building a prosperous nation is immense and the government is determined to ensure their due respect and dignity. The government’s efforts will continue to improve the quality of life and professional excellence of teachers.
He said, “We do not believe in imposing taxes in any field of education.” He assured that all types of taxes and VAT will be withdrawn in phases in the education sector.
