No lighting will be done on the occasion of Independence and National Day this time: Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed

Keeping in mind the fuel crisis, no lighting will be done nationwide on the great Independence and National Day on March 26 in order to reduce poverty, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said.

The minister made this statement while briefing journalists after a preparatory meeting to review law and order on the occasion of the holy Eid-ul-Fitr and the celebration of the great Independence and National Day at the conference room of the Ministry of Home Affairs at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Sunday (March 8, 2026).

The minister said that the government has taken special steps to maintain the law and order situation normal around the observance of Genocide Day on March 25, the celebration of the great Independence and National Day on March 26, and the holy Eid-ul-Fitr. He said that although colorful lighting is traditionally done on Independence Day, it is being avoided this time due to the emerging situation. He said that to avoid energy crisis and to be economical, it has been decided not to light up the country.

The minister also said that tight security will be ensured around all state programs, including the laying of wreaths by the President and Prime Minister at the Savar National Memorial to celebrate the great independence and national day with due dignity. He said that the government is paying special attention to ensuring smooth movement of people during the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr. He also said that instructions have been given to the concerned departments so that there is no hindrance in road transport and public life is maintained. Coordination is being done with the leaders of BGMEA and BKMEA so that there is no dissatisfaction with the salaries and allowances of workers, especially in the garment sector. Salahuddin Ahmed said that the Additional IGP of the Industrial Police has been given the responsibility of coordinating the preparations for Eid. He will maintain round-the-clock communication with the owner and worker representatives so that there is no deviation.

Regarding the recent isolated incidents and mob justice, the Home Minister said, “We are very serious about mobs. Mob culture will be eradicated from Bangladesh.” He also said that the accused in the crime committed in Narsingdi have been arrested as soon as possible and the police are also looking into the incidents in other places including Chittagong.
