Nationwide security arrangements taken for Bengali New Year 1433 celebration

Desk Report:

The Ministry of Home Affairs has taken strict security arrangements across the country to celebrate Bengali New Year 1433 nationally and the New Year of Chakma, Marma, Tripura, Garo and other ethnic groups in a joyful, peaceful and uninterrupted manner.

This decision was taken at a law and order meeting held on Wednesday (April 10, 2026) at the conference room of the Ministry of Home Affairs at the Bangladesh Secretariat under the chairmanship of Senior Secretary Manjur Morshed Chowdhury.

The important decisions taken in the meeting regarding law and order and security are as follows:

All programs organized nationwide, including Ramna Park, Suhrawardy Udyan, Dhaka University, Hatirjheel and Rabindra Sarovar, must be completed by 6 pm. No new public will be allowed to enter these areas after 5 pm.

Dhaka University’s Faculty of Fine Arts will maintain strict vigil to ensure the security of the ‘Baishakhi Shobhajatra’. Participants in the Baisakhi Shobhajatra will not be able to participate in the procession wearing masks. However, masks can be carried in their hands. Masks made for exhibition cannot be displayed in such a way that they cover the face.

Participants will have to join the procession at the beginning; no one will be able to enter in the middle after the procession starts.

For the sake of security, flying lanterns, bursting firecrackers, playing gas balloons and vuvuzela flutes has been completely banned nationwide. In addition, strict measures will be taken to stop motorcycle or car racing within 300 feet.

Dog squads will sweep Ramna Batamul, Dhaka University and important places. There will be watch towers, CCTV cameras and adequate archways at important points.

To prevent eve-teasing, mugging and pickpocketing, plainclothes detective surveillance and mobile courts will be conducted nationwide under the leadership of executive magistrates.

Fire service fire engines, ambulances and medical teams will be deployed at all major venues. Diving teams will be deployed at Ramna Lake to prevent any accidents.

It has been requested that the Dhaka University (TSC) Metrorail Station be closed on the day of Pohela Baishakh (April 14, 2026) for security reasons.

No vehicles without university stickers will be allowed to enter the Dhaka University area after 7 pm on April 13.

The general public has been requested not to carry bags, backpacks, matches or lighters. It has also been advised to keep a note with their identity with children.

Senior Secretary Manjur Morshed Chowdhury said in the meeting that the administration and law enforcement agencies will play all possible effective roles to make this festival of Bengali culture and heritage safe.

Senior officials from various ministries, including the Ministry of Home Affairs, and representatives from various intelligence agencies including the Police, RAB, and BGB, were present at the meeting.
