Information and Broadcasting Advisor Mahfuz Alam has said that media freedom is meaningless if there is no accountability to the people. All concerned, including journalists, must be aware of the value of media freedom.
The advisor said this at an Iftar Mahfil and exchange of views organized by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting at the Information Bhaban in the capital on Saturday (March 22, 2025).
Criticizing the role of the media in the last 16 years, he said that during that time, journalist organizations were run in collusion with business syndicates and political groups. This is unfortunate for our nation.

Mahfuz Alam said that as per the recommendations of the Media Reform Commission, discipline will be established in the media after discussing with the concerned stakeholders. The government will take necessary initiatives to increase the salaries and other benefits of media workers to a reasonable level.
The advisor said that to ensure media freedom, journalists need to be freed from the influence of owners and editors. He sought the cooperation of all concerned, including media owners and journalists, in media reform.
Information and Broadcasting Ministry Secretary Mahbuba Farzana, heads of departments and organizations under the ministry, and leaders of journalist organizations were present at the iftar mahfil and view-exchange meeting.
