Librarians are the ‘missionaries’ of society in building a knowledge-based society: Minister for Cultural Affairs

Desk Report:

A four-day training workshop (Batch-64) on knowledge and skill development of librarians/library representatives of private libraries organized by the National Book Center has begun. The workshop was inaugurated by Minister for Cultural Affairs Nitai Roy Chowdhury at the National Book Center Auditorium on Shaheed Abrar Fahad Avenue in the capital on Monday (April 20, 2026).

Speaking as the chief guest, the Minister for Cultural Affairs said, “We are carrying out extensive programs across the country on behalf of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. Our Prime Minister has taken the world of culture very seriously. Bangladesh is a country of diverse culture and this rich tradition is our pride. We want to build a knowledge-based society, where the role of libraries is undeniable.”

Highlighting the importance of reading books to prevent the menace of drugs, the minister further said that to protect the young generation from the increasing prevalence of drugs in the society, the practice of art and culture must be increased. We must develop a culture of reading not only textbooks, but also life-oriented and educational books.

He said to the librarians, you are the ‘missionaries’ of society, who spread the light of knowledge among people. He requested that libraries should not be closed rooms but should have transparent glass walls, so that people are inspired by the sight of reading books from outside.

Secretary for Cultural Affairs and Chairman of the National Book Center Management Board, Kaniz Maula, was present as a special guest at the event. Director of the National Book Center, AHM Sakhawat Ullah, presided over the event.

It is worth noting that 32 librarians from different districts across the country are participating in this year’s 64th batch of training.
