Chinese Water Resources Minister Li Guoying met with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. In the meeting, consensus was expressed on further strengthening cooperation between the two countries in the management of various rivers in Bangladesh, including Teesta, flood control, prevention of river erosion and development of water resources.
The meeting was held at the State Diaoyutai Guest House in Beijing at 12 noon on Thursday (June 25, 2026) local time (10 am Bangladesh time).
In the meeting, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman highlighted the ongoing river dredging activities in Bangladesh to address flood risks, protect the environment and sustainably manage water resources. He sought China’s cooperation in developing the country’s water resources management and especially expected China’s technical assistance in the Teesta management project.
In response, Chinese Water Resources Minister Li Guoying responded positively and assured all-round cooperation in water resources management of Bangladesh. Referring to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Bangladesh and China in 2005 and the visit of Chinese water experts to Bangladesh last year, he said that the existing cooperation between the two countries in this sector is practical and research-based.
The Prime Minister looked forward to China’s cooperation in preventing river erosion, developing the irrigation system and increasing the navigation capacity of Bangladesh.
At the time, Li Guoying said that Bangladesh can utilize China’s experience in water resource management. He called on Bangladeshi water experts and related officials to receive training in China.
During the meeting, both sides emphasized the need to further expand mutual cooperation in water resource management, river restoration and addressing climate-related challenges.
