The Interim government today (July 16, 2025) strongly condemned the horrific attack on a peaceful rally organized by the Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) in Gopalganj. In a statement, the government termed the violence as “extremely unacceptable” and a “shameful example of violation of civil rights.”
The statement said, “The use of violence in Gopalganj today is completely inexcusable. Depriving the young citizens of the country of their right to peacefully rally on the occasion of the first anniversary of their revolutionary movement is a violation of their fundamental rights.”
The statement further stated that NCP leaders, activists, police and media personnel participating in the rally were attacked, their vehicles were vandalized and many were physically assaulted. The banned Awami League student wing Chhatra League and pro-Awami League activists were named as responsible for this barbaric attack.
The interim government stressed, “Those involved in this heinous incident will be identified and legal action will be taken swiftly. Such violence has no place on Bangladeshi soil.”
The statement praised the immediate intervention of the army and police and highly praised the courage and determination of the students and people who continued to peacefully assemble despite the frightening situation.
Finally, the government made it clear, “Those who carried out the atrocities will not escape justice. Our country is peaceful, just and democratic – there is no place for violence here. Justice will definitely be established.”
