Desk Report:
It is mandatory to hoist the national flag of Bangladesh on various days determined by the government, including Independence Day and National Day. It is the duty of every citizen to follow the instructions on the proper use of the national flag in the ‘National Flag Rules’ enacted in 1972 (amended in 2010).
According to Article 4(1) of the Constitution of Bangladesh, ‘The national flag of the Republic is a filled circle of purple on a green field.’ On the other hand, the flag rules state that the color of the flag will be dark green and there will be a red circle inside the green. The size of the national flag will be a red circle in the middle of a rectangular field of 10×6 length and width. The circle will have a radius of one-fifth of the length. There are three types of sizes for using the flag according to the size of the building: 10×6, 5×3 and 2.5×1.5.
The flag shall not cover the hull, front or rear of a motor vehicle, railway vehicle or vessel under any circumstances. No other flag or coloured flag shall be hoisted above the flag of Bangladesh. Where the flag is displayed on a wall other than on a pole, the flag shall be displayed flush with the wall. If the flag is displayed in a public auditorium or meeting, it shall be placed facing upwards behind the speaker. If the flag is displayed in the middle of the road, it shall be displayed upright. The national flag shall not be lowered in a cemetery or allowed to touch the ground. The flag shall never be carried horizontally or flat; it shall always be held high and free. The flag shall be hoisted quickly and lowered with respect.
Where the flag is hoisted formally, the national anthem shall be sung at the same time. When the national anthem is played and the national flag is displayed, all those present shall stand facing the flag. Those in uniform shall salute. Where the flag is displayed on a motor vehicle, the flagpole must be firmly secured to the vehicle’s chassis or radiator cap clamp. Nothing may be inscribed on the flag.
