Home Adviser Lieutenant General (retd.) M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Monday (21 October, 2024) called for restoring discipline and bringing dynamism in the country’s traffic system in the greater interest of the people.

“Normalcy should be brought back in the traffic system for smooth movements of people and transportation of goods,” he told the inauguration ceremony of Traffic Week-2024 organised by Traffic Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) as chief guest at Rajarbagh Police Lines in the capital.

Youth and Sports Adviser of the Interim Government Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan and special assistant to Chief Adviser (CA) Lieutenant General (retd.) Abdul Hafiz spoke as the special guests with Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mainul Hassan in the chair.

Lt. Gen. (retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said the present government wants to make the traffic system more advance and sought cooperation of all in this regard.

Traffic Week-2024 started from today and will be observed until November 4 in order to raise mass awareness, improve traffic management and restore order in roads in the capital.

The Traffic Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has outlined a comprehensive programme marking the 15-day traffic week.

The Home Adviser said a total of three hundred students will work along with the traffic police to develop traffic system during the Traffic Week.

The traffic system had been interrupted during the Anti-discrimination student movement forcing the students to work for solving traffic system in the streets and the students gained success in this regard.

Home Adviser also said the traffic jam has been created in various streets of Dhaka city as almost two crore people are living in the city. Many vehicles including rickshaws are running in Dhaka city, resulting in traffic jam, he added.

Lt. Gen. (retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said a research team has been working to remove traffic jam in city and urged the people to cooperate with the traffic police.

Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan said the government is working to develop the traffic system. “We want to work for the country and its people with youths,” he added.

Accident, he said, occurred frequently in the streets as drivers of the vehicles don’t follow the traffic system.

Lt. Gen. (retd.) Abdul Hafiz said the country’s people want changing environment, peaceful life and want to return their homes in time.

He urged the law enforcers to ensure law and order situation in the country as the Interim Government will work for betterment of the country and its people.
