Green Shipbuilding Sector Will Create New Opportunities for Bangladesh’s Industrialization – Industry Adviser

Industry Adviser Mr. Adilur Rahman Khan has said that the green shipbuilding sector will create new opportunities for Bangladesh’s industrialization. He emphasized that Bangladesh must focus on building energy-efficient designs and vessels powered by LNG, hybrid, and renewable energy systems to seize this opportunity.

Mr. Khan made these remarks on Saturday (16 August 2025) while speaking at the national seminar titled “Green Shipbuilding Industry: A New Frontier for Industrialization”, held at Hotel Intercontinental Dhaka and organized by the International Business Forum of Bangladesh (IBFB).

The seminar was presided over by IBFB President Ms. Lutfunnissa Saudia Khan, with Dr. Anisuzzaman Chowdhury, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser, attending as Special Guest. The keynote paper was presented by Dr. Zaidi Sattar, Chairman & CEO of the Policy Research Institute of Bangladesh (PRI).

The Industry Adviser noted that the global demand for environment-friendly and low-emission vessels is rising rapidly. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set a target to reduce carbon emissions by 40% by 2030 and 70% by 2050. “Countries capable of producing and exporting eco-friendly, low-emission vessels will lead the maritime economy of the future,” he said.

He further mentioned that the Ministry of Industry will work to ensure global green certifications for shipyards, promote the use of renewable energy in production, and support the development of customized eco-friendly ships for the international market.

In his keynote paper, Dr. Zaidi Sattar highlighted that the global shipbuilding market was valued at USD 155 billion in 2024, with China holding 54.6% market share, South Korea 28%, and Japan 12.6%. Bangladesh has so far exported 50 ships worth USD 200 million to the international market.

Other speakers at the seminar included IBFB Director Engr. Shakhawat Hossain and former IBFB President Humayun Rashid.

The event was also attended by Mr. Syed Abu Nasser Bakhtiar Ahmed, Chairman of Agrani Bank PLC, Mr. Mohammad Muslim Chowdhury, Chairman of Sonali Bank PLC, former IBFB Presidents Mahmudul Islam Chowdhury and Hafizur Rahman Khan, along with leaders from various industrial and trade organizations.
