Government working to develop silk: State Minister for Textiles and Jute

Desk Report:

The government is working to develop the national heritage silk, said State Minister for Textiles and Jute Md. Shariful Alam. He said, “Under the direction of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the government is working to develop the silk sector. The silk sector plays an important role in poverty reduction. Most of the manpower in this sector is rural poor women. Developing this industry will increase rural employment. However, foreign investment will have to be brought in for this. For this, we will have to work in coordination with the concerned parties.”

The State Minister said these things when a delegation led by Japanese-based company Anoda Inc. came to meet the State Minister’s office at the Secretariat on Tuesday (March 31, 2026).

The State Minister said that under the direction of the Prime Minister, necessary work is being done to bring poor women involved in the silk sector under the ‘Family Card’ facility. The government is taking initiatives to reopen the closed factories related to this sector.

It is worth noting that the ‘Bangladesh Silk Board’ was created in 1977 by an ordinance of late President Ziaur Rahman for the development and growth of the traditional silk industry. Currently, its activities are running in 52 upazilas of 32 districts of this country.
