Government Plans to Drill 150 Wells by 2030 to Reduce Gas Import Dependency: State Minister for Energy

Desk Report:

To address the gas crisis and boost supply to the national grid, the Titas-28 well in Brahmanbaria has begun supplying an additional 12.5 million cubic feet of gas daily. On Saturday afternoon (September 19, 2026), Anindya Islam Amit, MP, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, formally inaugurated the gas production operations of the well.

Speaking at the inauguration, the State Minister expressed hope that the commencement of gas supply from the Titas-28 well would bring relief amidst the ongoing gas crisis. He noted that integrating gas from this well into the national grid would enable increased supply to the industrial, power, and other sectors.

He stated that the government has adopted a plan to drill another 150 wells by 2030 with the aim of achieving self-sufficiency in the energy sector. The government is making concerted efforts to reduce reliance on gas imports by enhancing the capabilities of domestic companies.

It was disclosed at the event that Bangladesh Gas Fields Company Limited (BGFCL) currently operates six gas fields: Titas, Habiganj, Bakhrabad, Narsingdi, Meghna, and Kamta. The company is one of the major state-owned natural gas producers under Petrobangla. Currently, BGFCL accounts for approximately 30 percent of the country’s total domestic gas production and about 18 percent of the total gas supply.

As part of the government’s plan to drill 150 wells, five projects are currently underway with the goal of adding approximately 106.5 million cubic feet of gas daily to the national grid by 2030 through the drilling of six new wells and the workover of eight shut-in wells under BGFCL.

Additionally, there is potential to add approximately 126 million cubic feet of gas daily to the national grid by drilling nine more new wells and performing workovers on 12 existing wells. As part of the government’s master plan, there is also a target to supply approximately 235 million cubic feet of gas daily to the national grid from 19 wells by 2035. Various seismic survey and exploration activities are currently underway in areas under the jurisdiction of BGFCL to boost gas production. A 3D seismic survey is being conducted across a total area of 1,450 square kilometers, comprising the Habiganj gas field and its adjacent 875 square kilometers, as well as 575 square kilometers covering the Bakhrabad, Narsingdi, and Meghna gas fields. Simultaneously, 2D and 3D seismic survey operations are in progress across a 632-square-kilometer area spanning the northwest of the Titas gas field and the northeast of the Narsingdi gas field.

As part of ongoing efforts to increase gas supply to the national grid, the Titas-28 well was drilled under the project titled “Drilling of 4 Appraisal-cum-Development Wells in Titas and Kamta Fields.” An agreement for this purpose was signed with the integrated drilling contractor, CNPC Chuanqing Drilling Engineering Company Ltd. (CCDC), China, on April 10, 2025.

Under the agreement, drilling operations for the Titas-28 well commenced on December 15, 2025. By June 19, 2026, the well had been drilled to a depth of 3,601 meters (Measured Depth/MD) or 3,471 meters (True Vertical Depth/TVD).

The well has a daily production capacity of 12 to 13 million cubic feet of gas. The completion of the Titas-28 well incurred a cost of approximately Tk 200 crore.

Md. Ziaul Haque, Secretary of the Energy and Mineral Resources Division, along with senior officials from Petrobangla and BGFCL, attended the event.

Following the inauguration of gas production operations at the Titas-28 well, State Minister Anindya Islam Amit inspected the ongoing drilling activities at the Titas-29 and Titas-31 wells.
