Government plans to build agro-based industries in Dinajpur, dig 20,000 km of canals: Prime Minister Tarique Rahman

Desk Report:

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that initiatives will be taken to build agro-processing industries to utilize the vast agricultural potential of the Dinajpur region. He said that if agricultural products can be preserved and processed, the local economy will be stronger and employment opportunities will increase.

He said these things while speaking as the chief guest at the Sudhi Sambalpur and Iftar Mahfil organized at the Dinajpur Circuit House ground on Monday (March 16, 2026).

The Prime Minister said that the government has already started working to implement the promises made to the people before the elections. He said, “Alhamdulillah, within a month of the formation of the government, we have started many of the promises made to the people.”

He said that as part of this, a canal digging program has been launched in different regions of the country. He also mentioned that the program was officially launched from the Kaharol area of Dinajpur.

The Prime Minister said that since many rivers, canals and streams in the country have been filled for a long time, there is a water crisis in the dry season and sudden floods in the rainy season damage crops and homes. The government has taken a long-term plan to solve this problem.

She also said that a plan has been taken to dig about 20,000 kilometers of canals in the next five years. As a result, she expressed hope that irrigation facilities in agriculture will increase and dependence on groundwater will decrease.

The Prime Minister said that if these government initiatives are implemented, the country’s agricultural sector will become more sustainable and productive, which will play an important role in overall economic development.
