Syeda Rizwana Hasan, the Water Resources Advisor, has announced that a finalized list of the country’s rivers will be published on Pohela Baishakh. This list will include local names and other relevant information about the rivers.

The Water Resources Advisor made the announcement while speaking as the chief guest at a special conference on ‘Rivers and Water Management’ organized by the Bangladesh Environment Movement (BAPA) and Bangladesh Environment Network (BEN) at the TSC Auditorium of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University in Dhaka on Friday (January 17, 2025).

The advisor stated, “We have already received a draft list of approximately 1,100 rivers from the Divisional Commissioners. This list is being reviewed to delineate the boundaries of canals and rivers in 64 districts to prevent encroachment.”

The advisor further mentioned that plans are underway to free four rivers around Dhaka and one river in each division from encroachment and pollution.

The special conference was presided over by BAPA’s Vice President, Professor Dr. M. Shahidul Islam, while the keynote address was delivered by Professor Dr. Mohammad Khalequzzaman, Global Coordinator of BEN and Vice President of BAPA. Participants from various levels of the environmental movement across the country attended the event.
