Fakir Mahbub Anam calls for strengthening regional cooperation for sustainable future at 82nd session of ESCAP

Diplomatic Desk:

Bangladesh has emphasized on strong regional cooperation at the 82nd session of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). Bangladesh’s delegation to the session was led by Fakir Mahbub Anam, Minister for Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology and Science and Technology.

The session is being held in Bangkok from April 21-24 with the theme ‘Leaving no one behind: advancing a society for all ages in Asia and the Pacific’. Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul inaugurated the session.

In his speech, the minister called for closer cooperation among regional countries to address climate change, global economic pressures and uncertainties. He said that mutual partnerships and coordinated efforts are essential to ensure sustainable development.

Fakir Mahbub Anam highlighted the domestic progress of Bangladesh and highlighted the government’s priority on supporting small and medium enterprises, attracting investment and encouraging innovation. At the same time, he emphasized on skill development for youth and women, job creation and increasing participation in the digital economy.

The minister reiterated Bangladesh’s commitment to climate action, including social protection, healthcare and renewable energy. He said that all countries need to work together to ensure inclusive development.

ESCAP Executive Secretary Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana said at the session that progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is not yet at the desired level and that it is necessary to further strengthen regional cooperation, policy coordination and evidence-based decision-making.
