European Union Chief Election Observer Evers Ijobs paid a courtesy call on Speaker of the National Assembly of Bangladesh Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram MP at his office today (April 26, 2026).
Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram said that the 13th National Assembly election has opened a new horizon in the democracy of Bangladesh. This parliament will play a very effective role in implementing the hopes and aspirations of the people. He said that the late former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia is a unique example of women’s representation in the restoration of parliamentary democracy and state policy-making.
The Speaker said that political parties may have different ideologies, but to overcome any crisis in the country, the government party, opposition party and other political parties try to find a solution together. This is a very positive aspect of parliamentary democracy.
During the meeting, they discussed the duty-free trade benefits and free trade agreements of European countries after Bangladesh’s transition from a least developed country to a middle-income country. In addition, they exchanged views on the status of women’s representation in political parties and the proportional representation of ethnic minorities in parliament.
The Speaker emphasized the formation of friendship groups with European Union countries and exchange visits of parliamentary delegations.
The European Union Ambassador to Dhaka, members of the delegation and senior officials of the Bangladesh National Parliament Secretariat were present at the event.
