Chief Whip of the Bangladesh National Parliament, Md. Nurul Islam, said that many have played a role in the struggle to restore the fundamental rights of the people of the country and restore democracy, but Ekushey TV played a courageous role by broadcasting the speeches of the current Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at that time.
The Chief Whip said these things in his speech as the chief guest at a program organized on the occasion of the organization’s 27th anniversary under the theme “Committed to Change” at the Ekushey TV Bhaban in Karwan Bazar in the capital on Tuesday (April 14, 2026).
State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yaser Khan Chowdhury delivered a welcome speech at the anniversary program.
Chief Whip Md. Nurul Islam said that there was no freedom of speech during the previous government. At that time, even the broadcasting of Tarique Rahman’s speeches was banned, and Ekushey TV broadcast his speeches in such difficult times. For this, the current chairman of Ekushey TV also has to go to jail.
Regarding the media’s coverage of positive news, the Chief Whip said that the media should always highlight positive events along with rational criticism. For example, although the news of the closure of the Eastern Refinery was reported in the media, the news of two oil ships waiting to be unloaded at the port did not receive coverage.
Tarique Rahman is working tirelessly for the economic liberation of the people. In this context, the Chief Whip said that within a few days of being elected, the Prime Minister inaugurated the Krishak Card today. Earlier, she inaugurated various works to implement the election manifesto, including family cards, payment of salaries and allowances to Imams-Muazzins and religious gurus.
A cake was cut and a cultural program was organized to mark the 27th anniversary of Ekushey TV.
The chairman and vice chairman of Ekushey TV spoke at the program. Ekushey TV journalists and crew members, as well as media workers, were present at the time.
