Edible oil supply situation on the way to normal: Commerce Minister

Desk Report:

Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir made a surprise inspection to observe the supply and price situation of edible oil in the capital’s markets.

On Sunday (May 3, 2026) afternoon, he visited various shops in the Chicken Market area of Karwan Bazar. During this time, the minister spoke to dealers, wholesalers and retailers and inquired about the supply system and market situation.

During the inspection, retailers said that the supply of edible oil has increased compared to before. It was also reported that the supply has increased from the dealers. Stating that the demand for 5-liter bottled oil is high, they said that buyers are now showing more interest in bottled oil instead of loose oil.

On the spot, it was seen that 5-liter bottled soybean oil is being sold at 970-975 taka. In addition, 1 liter and 2 liter bottled oil supplied earlier is being sold at 195 taka and 390 taka respectively.

The minister also spoke to general buyers. Buyers said that oil is available in the market and the supply situation has improved compared to before.

After the inspection, Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir said, “The government is working intensively to keep the supply situation of edible oil normal. The supply has already become much normal. Several meetings have been held with dealers and companies. Prices have had to be adjusted due to the global market situation. However, if the price of oil in the international market decreases, it will also be adjusted and reduced in the country.”

He also said that such surprise inspections will continue to ensure transparency and accountability in market management.

During the inspection, Secretary (Routine Responsibilities) of the Ministry of Commerce Md. Abdur Rahim Khan, Director General of the Department of Consumer Rights Protection Farooq Ahmed and other concerned officials were present.
