US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T. Christensen called on Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at his office at the Secretariat on Monday (April 27, 2026). The meeting discussed bilateral cooperation and development priorities in detail.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam said that Dhaka-Washington want to open new horizons in development cooperation. Highlighting the importance of international cooperation in Bangladesh’s ongoing development activities, he said that technical assistance, research and investment are needed to further strengthen the water supply, agriculture, infrastructure development and rural communication sectors.
He welcomed interested foreign investors, describing Bangladesh as a potential area for investment, and emphasized increasing the participation of the private sector in development activities.
The Minister further noted that the United States has long played an important role in enhancing the capacity of research institutions in the region and expressed hope that this cooperation will expand further in the future.
On the other hand, Ambassador Brent T. Christensen emphasized the need for coordinated initiatives in areas of mutual interest. He called for increased bilateral cooperation in the fields of agriculture, energy assistance, and renewable energy, including solar panels.
After the meeting, both sides expressed hope that through mutual cooperation and partnership, the development and progress of Bangladesh and the United States will accelerate in the future.
At that time, Secretary of the Local Government Department Md. Shahidul Hasan and Secretary of the Rural Development and Cooperatives Department Mohang Shawkat Rashid Chowdhury, along with senior officials of the ministry and heads of relevant departments were present.
