Co-hosts Canada have written a new chapter in the history of the FIFA World Cup. The North American country earned a point in the final round of the World Cup for the first time in its history by drawing 1-1 against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the first match of the World Cup held on its own soil.
Bosnia and Herzegovina took the lead early in the match held at Toronto Stadium on Friday (June 12, 2026). A goal from a corner kick by Jovo Lukic midway through the first half sent the crowd into a frenzy. A large number of Bosnian fans present in the stadium celebrated the goal.
After conceding the goal, Canada became desperate to get back into the match. In the second half, they increased their attacking edge and started to put pressure on the opponent’s defense. The result came in the 78th minute of the match, when experienced forward Sil Larin equalized for the hosts.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw as there were no further goals. This draw gave Canada the taste of earning points for the first time in World Cup history.
Canada previously participated in the finals of the World Cup in 1986 and 2022. However, they lost all six matches played in those two events. As a result, this one point earned in Toronto is being considered a historic milestone for Canadian football.
