The Consensus Commission will begin the second round of talks with political parties on reform work in the first week of June. Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus will inaugurate the talks.
The first round of talks with political parties by the Consensus Commission ended on May 19.
This decision was made at a meeting of the Consensus Commission held at the State Guest House Jamuna on Monday (May 26, 2025) under the chairmanship of Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus. In the meeting, other members of the Consensus Commission informed the Chief Advisor about the latest progress in the talks with political parties.
At this time, the Chief Advisor suggested increasing public awareness by involving civil society and grassroots organizations in the reform process and elections, along with political parties.
The Chief Advisor said, “People need to be made election-oriented. Citizens need to be made aware that no one can snatch the ballot box.” We need to bring discipline, organize safe elections with the people.’
‘The Bangladesh we got after such a big coup should not remain the same Bangladesh,’ he said.
Today’s meeting discussed the formation of an independent commission to investigate the role of those involved in irregularities in various elections in the past.
Commission Vice-Chairman Professor Ali Riaz said that every political party has already expressed consensus on this issue.
Commission member Ayub Mia called for the immediate formation of the Public Administration Reform Implementation Commission. He said that the organograms of various government agencies that were prepared by the ENAM Commission in 1982 are still there. Various agencies have already become unnecessary and many new agencies have been formed. If this commission is formed, these organograms can be restructured.
He said that two other commissions have worked on the NBR reform without the recommendations of the Public Administration Commission, which has created a kind of lack of coordination.
Representative of the Judicial Reform Commission, Emdadul Haque, called on the Chief Advisor to ensure that the commission formed to appoint Supreme Court judges based on the consensus of political parties can work transparently.
Representative of the Anti-Corruption Reform Commission, Iftekharuzzaman, called for the formulation of a roadmap to implement the recommendations of the reform commissions formed on media, labor, local government, women and health, in addition to the six commissions initially formed.
Head of the Election Commission Reform Commission, Badiul Alam Majumder, called for the draft proposal prepared for the local government elections in 2008 to be published in the form of an ordinance.
Representative of the Police Reform Commission, Safar Raj Hossain, was also present at the meeting.
