Bangladesh’s sustainable progress in women’s development: State Minister for Foreign Affairs

Like other countries in the world, Bangladesh celebrated the day on the occasion of International Women’s Day. On this occasion, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam organized an iftar program at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Dhaka Hotel in Dhaka.

The program was mainly attended by women guests. Diplomats, politicians, government officials, representatives of civil society and prominent figures from various sectors were present.

In his speech, the State Minister for Foreign Affairs paid tribute to the contribution of women in Bangladesh. He remembered the pioneer women of the great Liberation War and highlighted the role of women leaders, professionals, teachers and entrepreneurs who led the country’s development progress.

He recalled with deep respect the historic initiatives taken by former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, known as the ‘Mother of Democracy’, to expand women’s education. At the same time, he also mentioned the contribution of martyred President Ziaur Rahman in increasing women’s employment and establishing women’s institutions.

The State Minister also highlighted various initiatives for women empowerment under the leadership of the current Prime Minister, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. These initiatives include the ‘Family and Krishak Card’ program, support for women entrepreneurs, free education for girls up to postgraduate level, expansion of healthcare and plans to increase women’s participation in the formal economy.

She also mentioned the government’s strong commitment to preventing violence against women and ensuring effective redressal of such incidents.

The event was also addressed by Sarah Cook, the UK High Commissioner to Bangladesh, and Gitanjali Singh, the Country Representative of UN Women Bangladesh. They highlighted the importance of global partnerships and joint initiatives to establish women’s rights and gender equality.

The event was attended by prominent women from various fields, including Barrister Zaima Rahman, the daughter of the Prime Minister.
