Bangladesh has called for increased investment in resolving grievances and disputes through mediation before they escalate into violence.
Shama Obaid Islam MP, State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh, made this call on Thursday (September 24, 2026) at the 16th ministerial meeting of the UN ‘Group of Friends of Mediation,’ held at the Turkish House in New York, USA.

Speaking at the meeting, she said, “We must mediate before grievances turn into violence—at a stage when human and financial costs are at their lowest.”
Highlighting Bangladesh’s extensive experience in peacekeeping, the State Minister emphasized the need to invest in building capacity for mediation and peacebuilding. In this context, she also mentioned the ‘Integrated Peacebuilding Competency Programme’ conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Peace Support Operation Training (BIPSOT).

Shama Obaid Islam called for forging more effective partnerships among states, regional stakeholders, local mediators, and the United Nations. At the same time, she stressed the importance of respecting national ownership and leadership in such initiatives.
She also underscored the need to further strengthen the UN’s capacity for conflict prevention. Specifically, she highlighted the importance of predictable funding, rapidly deployable mediation support, and timely action based on early warning signals.
The State Minister also emphasized the responsible use of technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in mediation, noting the necessity of appropriate safeguards to ensure neutrality, transparency, and confidentiality.
The meeting, held on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, was jointly organized by Finland and Turkey. Ministers and senior representatives from various countries participated in the event.
