EU-backed forest protection project launched to protect forests and forest-dependent communities

A new project titled “Protecting Forest Communities from Drastic Forest Loss, Plantation Economy, Climate Change, and Land Grabbing” was launched in the capital Dhaka on Sunday (July 20, 2025) with the support of the European Union and organized by the Society for Environment and Human Development (SEHD) to protect the livelihoods of forest-dependent communities and maintain environmental balance.

Planning Advisor Professor Dr. Wahiduddin Mahmud was present at the inauguration of this project.

Speaking at the event, Michal Kreja, Head of Cooperation of the European Union Mission to Bangladesh, said, “This new project will play an important role in empowering indigenous peoples. It will also help in understanding their challenges and presenting effective solutions in policymaking.”

The project will be implemented by the Society for Environment and Human Development (SEHD). Co-financed by the German organization Misereor, the activities to be implemented under the project include:

  • Protection of traditional land and forest rights
  • Capacity building through research, training and community advocacy
  • Natural forest conservation and climate adaptation development

The panelists noted that a green and just future can only be ensured by protecting forests and the people who depend on them together.
