Stakeholder Consultation on Revised National Fisheries Policy (Draft)

Bangladesh’s fisheries sector is vital to our economy and nutrition — contributing 3.61% to GDP, 25.30% to agricultural GDP, and supporting over 60% of national animal protein intake. We’re also self-sufficient in fish production, with growing exports to UK, US, Germany, France, India, and Japan.

On Monday (23 June, 2025) the Department of Fisheries (DoF) and FAO jointly hosted a stakeholder consultation workshop on the revised National Fisheries Policy (Draft) at the Cotton Development Board, Dhaka. The event is part of the GEF-funded, FAO-supported project on Community-based Climate Resilient Fisheries and Aquaculture Development.

Farida Akhter, Honorable Adviser, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock (MoFL) and Jiaoqun Shi, FAO Representative in Bangladesh graced the event while Md. Abdur Rouf, Director General, Department of Fisheries (DoF) chaired the sessions.

The revised policy focuses on:

Climate resilience

Sustainable resource management

Market access

Participatory governance
