BGMEA holds dialogue with representatives from various sectors on the backdrop of US tariff hike

The announcement by US President Donald Trump administration to impose an additional 37% tariff on Bangladeshi products in the US has created deep concern in the country’s export-oriented sectors.

In this context, on Sunday (April 6, 2025), BGMEA organized a dialogue titled ‘US Tariff and Bangladesh’s Exports: Assessing Impacts and Charting the Strategic Priorities’ with representatives from various sectors at a local hotel in Dhaka.

The meeting assessed the impact of imposing an additional 37% tariff on Bangladeshi products in the US on various sectors and discussed the steps to be taken.

The dialogue meeting, chaired by BGMEA Administrator Md. Anwar Hossain, was attended by FBCCI Administrator Hafizur Rahman, BGMEA Former President Anisur Rahman Sinha, Former President Dr. Rubana Haque, Leathergoods and Footwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association of Bangladesh (LFMEAB) President Syed Nasim Manjur, BKMEA President Md. Hatem, Former President Khandaker Rafiqul Islam, PRAN-RFL Group Chairman and CEO Ahsan Khan Chowdhury, PRI’s Dr. Zahidi Sattar, RAPID Chairman Dr. Abdur Razzak, SANEM Executive Director Dr. Selim Raihan, Chaiti Composite Ltd. Managing Director Abul Kalam, Dr. Mostafa Abid Khan, and others.

In the meeting, exporters expressed concern that the additional 37 percent tax imposed on Bangladeshi products in the United States will cause severe crisis for the garment industry and other export sectors. In addition, the increase in tariffs will increase the prices of Bangladeshi products, including ready-made garments, in the US market, resulting in a decrease in demand and increased competition in the market.

In the dialogue, exporters emphasized on finding a practical solution to stabilize the economy. They also exchanged views on possible measures to deal with the situation.
