Denmark’s cooperation will play an effective role in addressing Dhaka’s water crisis: LGRD Minister

Diplomatic Desk:

Denmark’s cooperation will play an effective role in addressing Dhaka’s growing demand for clean water and water crisis, said Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Dr. Abdul Moin Khan. He said that Denmark can be an important partner of Bangladesh in the field of water supply, waste management and development assistance.

He said these things during a meeting with Danish Ambassador to Bangladesh Christian Brix Moller at the office of the Minister of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives at the Secretariat on Tuesday (August 25, 2026). State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam was present at the meeting.

The meeting discussed further strengthening bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Denmark, expanding cooperation in water supply and waste management, and the possibility of Danish investment in development projects.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Danish Ambassador congratulated the Local Government Minister on assuming the new responsibility. At the same time, he expressed hope to further strengthen bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Denmark and expand areas of cooperation.

The minister said that Denmark can play an important role in important sectors such as water supply and waste management in Bangladesh. Especially, Denmark has investment opportunities in the field of energy production from waste.

The meeting also discussed various aspects of Denmark’s financing and cooperation in the Sayedabad Water Treatment Plant Project (Phase-3). The Danish government will finance the project with Tk 4.5 billion. Out of this, Tk 1,500 crore will be provided as a grant and Tk 3,000 crore will be provided as low-interest loan assistance.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam said that Denmark’s cooperation in the third phase of the Sayedabad Water Treatment Plant Project is a major success for the government. If the project is implemented, it will be possible to deal with the increasing demand for clean water in Dhaka city to a large extent.

He said that the Danish funding will not put a major financial pressure on the government to implement the project.

The meeting was attended by Local Government Department Secretary Md. Shahidul Hasan, Dhaka WASA Managing Director Md. Aminul Islam and other senior officials of the ministry.
